(Drum roll, please...) The Green Project is pleased to award five furniture design awards on Saturday, April 16th at The Green Project’s annual furniture design competition and gala, Salvations 2011. The categories for competition are Best in Show, Most Inventive Reuse of Materials, Best Craftmanship, Best Traditional Design, and Best Modern Design.
BEST IN SHOW
William Roberts of Nomad Studio will receive the award for Best In Show for “Bone Bench.” “Bone Bench” is built from plywood culled from construction site debris.
MOST INVENTIVE REUSE OF MATERIALS
Rachel White of Raejoi will receive Most Inventive Reuse of Materials for her light fixture, “Tint-acle.” “Tint-acle” is crafted from newspaper, newspaper spools, and copper tubing, creating a visually stunning tentacle.
BEST CRAFTMANSHIP
Best Craftmanship will be received by Paul Troyano for his “Fir Table,” created from wood salvaged from dumpsters around New Orleans.
BEST TRADITIONAL DESGIN
Thomas Dutel and Drew Harrison of Dutel Custom Woodworking will receive the Best T raditional Design Award for their submission: “Wally Bed.” This twin bed is comprised of wrought iron and antique heart pine collected from Mid-City demolition sites.
BEST MODERN DESIGN
Joe Doherty of Joe Doherty Woodworking and Jacob Hollimon of Jacob Lee Furniture tied for Best Modern Design. Doherty submission of “Chair 545” is constructed from kiln fired scrap glass, sinker cypress, and Spanish cedar. Hollimon introduced the word’s first iPad chair with “Wriding Bench,” made from third
generational laminated strand lumber (LSL) and mahogany.
The furniture looks great. But they're made of wood so I don't think it's that environment-friendly. Don't you think?
