OCTOBER 15::
Lighting Fixture Repair with Abe Geasland. Participants can bring in lighting fixtures and get help from Abe to repair/revamp them. Get lit with us! 

OCTOBER 22::
Bicycle Maintenance/Repair with Matt Robinson of RUBARB. Participants can bring in their bikes, or whatever components they need to work on. Matt will be bringing tools from RUBARB, but if you have your own tools, you are welcome to bring them as well. 

OCTOBER 29:: @ Whole Foods Veterans 
Recycled Paper Jewelry/Crafts with Sophie Johnson of New Orleans Craft Mafia.Reusing paper to make rolled and 
paper pod beads into jewelry.


Unless noted all workshops take place at The Green Project on Saturdays from 11a-1p and are FREE to our members. 
Future members are invited to attend for a minimal $5 donation.

SEPTEMBER 2011 Green Projectivities

    
9/3: Patching Hardwood Floors and Paint Prepping with Rob Brent of Historic Home Recyclers. Rob will show us how to pull up problem boards, both hardwood and laminate, and replace them, as well as how to prime and paint various surfaces.

9/10: Mending Clothes with Rebekah Apotre of 504 Stitches. ***We have eight sewing machines available for this class, so please RSVP through Facebook or email: alove@thegreenproject.org   Bring any clothes that need new life along with needles and thread.

9/17: Rainwater Catchment with Demetria Christo of EcoUrban, LLC. Demetria will talk about different ways to harvest rainwater and demonstrate how to turn a 55-gallon drum barrel into a reservoir.

 9/24: Halloween Mask-Making with Sarah Smith. COME CELEBRATE HallowGREEN with us at our mini Green Fair/ Paint and E-Waste Drive at Whole Foods Veterans in Metarie! Come learn how to use recycled materials to make and decorate your  own Halloween mask.

 OUR WORKSHOPS TAKE PLACE FROM 10AM-12PM EACH SATURDAY MORNING & ARE HELD AT  OUR 2831 MARAIS ST. LOCATION UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED. GREEN PROJECTIVITY WORKSHOPS ARE FREE FOR MEMBERS & JUST $5 FOR ALL OF OUR FUTURE MEMBERS!

Senica Naturals Workshop 8/20::

If you're planning on joining us for our Home Remedies and Beauty Treatments Workshop next Saturday with the founder of Senica Naturals, there are a few things you should bring!

Each participant will have the option to choose 2 of the 5 recipes Benardette brings with her.  The options are:: 

• Infused oil
• Body scrub
• Natural detergent
• Dish cleanser
• Body tea

For the Infused oil please bring::
clean and dry herbs
olive or other cooking oil

For the homemade cleaners:: borax, baking soda & citric acid

For the Body scrub::
1-2 cups salt or sugar
oil with light or no scent (eg: almond, jojoba, corn, safflower, avocado)
essential oil

Benardette will be bringing the ingredients for the other three items
participants can choose to make, which include a dishwashing detergent
and herbal body tea.

Saturday, February 5, 10am-12pm

Soil Composition & Bed Preparation

  Great soil is the foundation for any successful garden.  During this workshop Tammany Baumgarten will discuss proper soil composition, texture, fertility and drainage.  She will also be bringing testing kits from the LSU Ag Center for those who are curious about the quality of their soil.

  About the presenter: Tammany is a local Master Gardener and the Past President of the Master Gardeners of Greater New Orleans. She is a licensed Landscape Horticulturist and Irrigation Contractor with the State of Louisiana, a member of the Louisiana Nursery and Landscape Association, and the Louisiana Native Plant Society.

Vegetable Gardening in New Orleans

Are you looking for a little guidance about starting your spring garden? If so, come participate in this week's workshop. Zé daLuz will discuss the ins and outs of vegetable gardening and companion planting.  After the presentation and discussion you can put your new knowledge to good use in a short, hands-on planting session in our courtyard.  

About the presenter: Zé daLuz is an artist who lives in the Bywater. Her experience and love of vegetable gardening began in the 1970s when she first started learning about organic gardening.  She is a seed-saver who currently gardens in pots while looking forward to a larger in-ground space.  She has taught gardening and art workshops to adults as well as children.

Organic Pest Control

Conventional pesticides have the potential to contaminate the air, soil, and water. In this week's workshop Grant Estrade will discuss different methods of organic pest control.

About the presenter: Grant  is the owner of Laughing Buddha Nursery which is located in Metarie, LA.  He seeks to expose individuals to their connection with the planet through sustainable and edible gardening.

Small Engine Maintanance

Prepare yourself for summer vegetation battles by getting your weed eaters, lawn mowers, and chainsaws in tip top shape. During this workshop, Ford Brewster will teach the basics of small engine maintenance. 

About the presenter: Ford is the Tool Lending Library Coordinator for HandsOn New Orleans.  He is a self taught jack-of-all-trades with experience in landscaping and construction.

Home Rainwater Catchment

Saturday, January 8

10am-12pm

Learn how to conserve water in your garden and yard. Come to this week's Green Projectivity where Demetria Christo will discuss home water catchment and management.  After the presentation, we will head outside and learn how to construct a low-cost rain barrel.

Solar Hot Water

Saturday, January 15 

10 am-12 pm

Learn about energy conservation and how to build a simple, affordable solar hot water heater with Dan Nelson. During this workshop, we will be improving the hot water heater that was built as one of last year's Green Projectivities.

Chicken Coop Building & Chicken Care  Saturday, January 22 3 pm-5pm Want to start a home laying operation or just learn more about chicken husbandry?  Then come participate in this week's Green Projectivity lead by Jessa Madosky.  In this workshop, you will learn how to construct a chicken coop using reclaimed materials, and Jessa will address your questions about our feathered friend gallus gallus domesticus. Home Composting Systems Saturday, January 29 10am-12pm Home composting is a great way to reuse kitchen and yard waste, reduce landfill size, decrease landfill methane emissions, and create fertile soil for gardening. Come to The Green Project to learn about different methods of home composting with Ariel Dorfman from the New Orleans Food and Farm Network. All Green Projectivities are $5, FREE for TGP members, and kid/adult friendly. Green Projectivities are held at The Green Project warehouse, 2831 Marais Street. Questions? Suggestions? Feeling Artsy This Weekend?

Shopping at The Green Project always sparks those creativity synopses. But if you are feeling particularly artsy this weekend, boy, are there two things to look forward to!

Stop by The ReUse District Art Yard and make your own sculptures and installations out of reused materials. Take a break from the New Orleans Fringe Fest theater scene, and wander over to The ReUse District Art Yard at The Fringe’s  Free-For-All Tent. The ReUse District will provide reused materials at the Art Yard to be transformed into sculptures of all kinds by YOU. Let your fellow theater-goers admire your creativity this weekend, and together we can show that reuse is limitless! A special thanks to The New Orleans Fringe Fest for this creative partnership and New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Rebuilding Together New Orleans, and The Green Project for lending these materials.

 

Gear up for Draw-A-Thon, upstairs at The Green Project.The 4th annual Draw-A-Thon, organized by Press Street, is already upon us and our spooky upstairs space will be filled with 24 hours (yes, a full 24 hours) of drawing workshops. For a complete schedule, visit Press Street.
